How I Lost 50 Pounds (25kgs) With Minor Life Changes...
If you are trying to lose some stubborn weight, maybe this will help you on your journey.
Happy 4th of July to my American friends!! đđđ
Letâs get back to you why you opened this email in the first place. How I lost weight and more importantly, how you can lose weight too!
My Story
Quick! Lets take a trip down memory lane.
I was weighing myself and for the first time in my life I weighed 220 pounds. I was rethinking all my life choices and how I ended up here. The Covid lockdowns really took a toll on my mental and physical health.
But I was determined to figure out how to lose weight. How hard could it be right? Everyone else is making it look so easy on Instagram!
Well, what I realized was that there was a million and one people sharing their unique method of losing weight. I felt lost. I hadnât even begun and I wanted to give up.
Even if I wanted to go to a gym most of them were shut down. Thatâs when I decided to take a simple approach I had read about so often but never tried. It seemed to easy. Too simple.
That method is being in a calorie deficit. You see, really any method, whether its weight watchers or taking Ozempic works the same way. You eat less calories than you burn. (Ozempic just forces you to eat less and then you get Ozempic butt.)
I always thought I had to go to the gym and work extremely hard and âburnâcalories. That definitely helps. But you donât need a gym membership to lose a lot of weight.
How I Lost 50 Pounds?
After trying and failing different programs for weeks, I found something that had promise for me. Itâs simple enough that I knew I could commit to it.
This is how it works:
I figured out how many calories I was burning just by doing my day to day activities.
I bought a food scale from amazon and downloaded a calorie tracking app.
I set a goal of eating 500 calories less than what my body was burning per day.
500 calorie deficit per day x 7 days = 3500 calorie deficit per week. 1lb of fat is 3500 calories. This meany if I followed this plan I would lose a pound per week in theory. In reality, some weeks I lost 3lbs and other weeks I actually gained weight (water retention). But overall, it did come out to a pound per week.
I increased my activity. Mind you I had no gym access, so I would walk 10,000 steps per day.
Most people already walk 2500 steps per day already. So I went for a 3.5-4 mile walk which equals about 7500 steps for me. Tracked on my iPhone in the health app.
This is simple but not easy.
Staying consistent is the key to this game. I could be well under my calories for the day, and then get late night cravings and nuke the entireâs day worth of work with a tub of ice cream calling my name. Or that bag of chips. Or chocolate covered pretzels (oddly specific but IYKYK).
At first I would eat less, but I quickly realized I needed to eat in a specific way in order to stay full and CONTROL my cravings.
I had to focus my meals on protein. Protein keeps you fuller longer and 20-30% of the calories are burned from digestion alone (thermic effect of food, TEF)!
The Secret?
Consistency. Each and every day I had to eat less calories than I burned. But how can I stay consistent if I was always hungry? And I donât want to sacrifice flavor day in day out!?
And the key to consistency?
I was making healthier lower calories delicious alternatives of my favorite foods. I was eating delicious food and losing weight!
I wasnât sacrificing any flavor! Some people believe that eating a reduced calorie diet = eating a reduced flavor diet. This couldnât be less true. Thatâs exactly why I put together my Indian Meal Prep Cookbook.
The only way to stay consistent was to make low calorie/high protein foods that taste amazing. When I did this, I didnât even feel like I was making a change in diet. And when I reached this point of being in a deficit without even trying, that is when the magic happened.
It just became a habit on its own for me to be in a calorie deficit. I had systemized my weight loss without even trying!
I began to meal prep in bulk and any time I got a craving I would have one of my low calorie lunches/dinners. (This is also super economical, by the way. Every meal came out to about $5-6. I was losing weight and saving money!)
Results
I ended up losing 50 pounds in 11 months. From 220lbs to 170lbs and 8% body fat.
By increasing my steps and lowering my calories, I turned my body into a furnace. I was burning way more calories than I was consuming so my body had no other option than to burn the only energy source available to it, fat.
I lost 50 pounds by staying consistently in a caloric deficit. I was only able to stay consistent because I was full from eating delicious alternatives of my favorite foods.
I compiled a lot of these savory recipes in my Indian Weightloss Cookbook. Indian food is traditionally loaded with calories but super flavorful. So I started making these recipes as healthier low calories versions that still tasted as delicious as the original versions.
